Max Webers is a famous personality and educator who have developed a multitude of management styles over his lifetime. In one of his books, he presents an idealistic vision of leadership. He believes that leaders should be “quick thinkers, quick to learn, and be willing to modify their plans if they do not seem to be working”. On the other hand, “persons are masters of detail and careful planners, leaders are concerned with broad issues and broad mindedness”.
These opposing characteristics are often found in the contrasting styles that he presented in his numerous management books. In one book, “The Opposable Leadership”, he wrote, “A leader must understand that power comes from a position of superior advantage, but that this advantage can be lost by acting in haste and with hubris”. This quote is quoted to illustrate how some leaders see the world, while others see clearly the flaws in their tactics.
These two leaders put forth opposing viewpoints, yet one is a visionary and the other a strict planner. Their difference of philosophies on how to lead is as clear as the difference between a mediocre artist and an extraordinary artist. Visionaries create a vision for the future, whereas a leader sees an opportunity where once there was none. In a vision, something new has been created or a problem has been solved, thus fulfilling a purpose. A leader sees that there is a need for more creativity, flexibility, and innovation as well as a need for organization, teamwork, and a vision to reach critical goals.
Max Webers leadership styles, although opposing, compliment each other well. The secret to leadership is to be able to use communication effectively to persuade your followers to take the desired action. You must be able to gain their respect and trust, as well as be able to inspire confidence. Communication plays a vital role in how to respond, and how to lead in these times. Both are vital aspects in leading, but it seems that some managers have a difficult time when it comes to communicating their ideas effectively.
When a leader takes a direction and communicates this positive vision, confidence is key. This confidence will carry over to the employees. They will also have a sense of ownership of the company’s vision and direction. It is important to remember that a management style is merely a tool; the leader must have a unique way of managing and inspiring.
Some managers like to lead by having an ‘instant decision’ and expect others to follow suit. This is not a leadership style. Instant decisions are not always the best way to go. In fact, many times it results in a loss of control and employees may feel that they have been discarded. It must be understood that leaders must lead by example.
Another way to lead is to establish communication with your followers. It is common for many leaders to tell their followers to follow them or the leader. However, a good leader must also tell them why they should follow him or her. A good leader must find ways to communicate with followers and motivate them to work harder. A leader must have a plan of action and clearly outline each step so that people know what they need to do to succeed.
Max Webers offers seven management styles that are related to organizational skills. This includes setting goals, delegating work, coaching, leading, and motivation. He even has chapters on areas that are important boost organizational productivity such as conflict resolution, creating goals and a strategic planning process. Although some of the management styles might seem overly simple, Webers has made it clear that these steps are extremely effective. In his book, he states, “An organization is based on cooperation, and delegation rather than on authority and control.” By following the guidelines provided in “The 7 Habits of Effective Management,” one can become an organized leader that is capable of leading employees to success.
